Sell a Car With Engine Problems
Engine problems don't automatically mean a car can't be sold — but they do mean accurate disclosure matters more than usual. Buyers who deal with mechanical issues exist, but they need to know what they're taking on.
Being specific about the problem
Where possible, describe the symptom (won't start, loses power, warning light, unusual noise, overheating) and anything you know about the cause — for example, a diagnosis from a garage, or when the issue started.
If you don't know exactly what's wrong, that's fine to say — 'engine warning light on, not yet diagnosed' is still useful information for a buyer to work with.
Setting realistic expectations
A car with known engine problems will typically be valued against the likely repair cost, not against a fully-working equivalent. Our Repair or Sell Calculator can help you think through whether repairing first makes sense for you.
Some buyers specifically look for cars with mechanical faults to repair and resell, or for parts — being upfront widens rather than narrows your pool of realistic buyers.
